Personal comminication on the book
Carol,
When I was a young boy, I remember I read many books about great persons, history and SF.....Among them, there are several books I could remember still , not because it is good books to remember, but because it made me sad and emotional and also gave me some unknown pre-conception( or prejudice) about some specific things. Later on, I came to understand that the preconception( prejudice) has been remained strongly somewhere in my heart and never disappear. Now I realize that selecting a book for young age is very important.
I am thinking that Yoko's book( so far.....) might be the book that can influence young students heart in unbalanced way.
I feel uneasy to think that the book has been read without proper check&balance influencing your students hearts for many years.
I believe it is not too late to correct.
Just my personal feeling.....
Regards,
Jay

How to start
If you want to join me and want to start the protest,
1. Check your school district and found 2 groups:
-. Curriculum committee
-. language art supervisor
2. Send email to ask about the book : I can provide some sample letters I used.
3. wait for their answer.
4. Most of case, I expect, they will reply soon and want to meet with you to discuss about the book.
Now at this moment, you might need some advice how to discuss that well with the supervisor.
Let's discuss that later on. Find the school district and send a letter to them is the first thing to do.
Have a good day,
Jay

About reality of current situation regarding Yoko's story in USA
As you might sense that, I am not for sure whether we can remove the book from the curriculum. That could be ultimate solution on this issue but I do not think individual can do that. Maybe Korea govenment or religious leaders could be the one. I will let them do that work. In order to remove the book completely, I assume that it could take forever. instead of tedious and time/money taking waiting game, I chose reasonable approach.
In my view, I think it might be good opportunity to introduce korea/korea culture/literature among young students in USA by inserting more books in their curriculum.
In my reaing of Yoko's story, it is well written although there are lots of issues inside but in this free country where there are lots of diversity, it might not be possible to remove the book.
Just my 2 sense,
Jay

School districts in USA
http://nces.ed.gov/programs/digest/d05/
According to the above websites, there are over 14,000 school districts in USA and most of the schools, especially 6th ~8th grades( middle schools) use So far from the bamboo grove in their curriculum. The evaluation among the teacher is very good.
I just started my son's school district and extend the campaign to other school districts.
Please join me if you are interested in correcting the issues.

Current activity
To the visitors to my Blog,
I had a meeting with language art supervisor to discuss about the book. Here is the email I sent to her about the meeting summary:
Carol,
It was very fruitful meeting with you and I feel relieved somewhat since I came to know that you are aware of the issues and take it seriously and positively. I amcopying Pat since I have been talking with her about that book.
As we discussed , a very few people are intersted in oriental history especially korea and other small countries and becuase of that , so far from the bamboo grove (from now on So far) can be selected as a good reading materials for young students.
We have the same view on that book :
1. The book has unbalanced historical context about the 40 years of cruel Japanese occupancy in Korea. The book might lead the young reader assume that korea asa cruel offerder and Japanese as a poor victim overall. The book itself and alone can not serve well for the right information.
2. The book has some strong sexual description that might not be appropriate to young students.
3. The book is well written and can be better book to read if there is some counterpart: (Recommended some books). Before young student read the book, 1) Class teacher must have some time to let student know about the histrical fact at that time. 2) Before student read the book, class teacher must recommend " the counterpart " to read first. 3) the counterpart book will be studied further among curriculum committes and supervisors and teachers.
4. There are some unclear issues remained and summarized for further study.
5. Carol will send an official letter to Jay Chun about the book and the plan.
I just formed a group of people who are interetsed in correcting the issues and spreading the campaign to other school district. WW-P is the first school district. Inmy understanding, there are over 14,000 school districts in USA. The purpose of the group is not to remove the book but to add more historical information and morebooks to make young students understand the history at that time.
We hope we can change a little.
I believe I had a good start with Carol and Pat.

Jay Chun
